Mt Fuji

On July 16th, a group of students embarked on an adventurous journey to ascend the iconic Mt Fuji, Japan’s highest peak. They made their way up the mountain, overcoming various challenges and basking in the stunning natural beauty that surrounded them. After a day of hiking, they reached the 8th station, where they set up camp for the night, allowing them to rest and prepare for the final ascent. This experience not only provided them with a sense of accomplishment but also deepened their appreciation for nature and teamwork.

Fushimi Inari Shrine

Students visited Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of the most iconic religious sites in Japan, and got to see the magnificent “thousand gates,” which are vibrant vermilion torii gates that create picturesque pathways up the mountain. As they walked through these enchanting gates, they learned about the rich history and cultural significance of the shrine, dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice and agriculture. The serene atmosphere and the stunning views along the trails captivated the students, making their visit not only educational but also an unforgettable experience that deepened their appreciation for Japanese traditions.

Kokutai-ji Temple

Students visited a temple in Toyama, specifically the Kokutai-ji Temple where the monks graciously gave us a detailed tour of the sacred grounds. During our time there, we immersed ourselves in the tranquil atmosphere and rich history of the temple. The monks, known for their patience and wisdom, not only shared insights about Buddhist practices but also taught us how to meditate effectively, emphasizing the importance of mindfulness and inner peace. This experience allowed us to connect deeply with the spiritual significance of the temple and appreciate the serene beauty that surrounded us.

Miyajima Island

Students visited Miyajima Island to enjoy the nature, local crafts, sacred deer, and the shrine, where they immersed themselves in the serene landscapes that featured vibrant greenery and breathtaking ocean views. They explored charming artisan shops, discovering unique handcrafted souvenirs that reflected the rich cultural heritage of the island. Along their journey, they encountered the famed sacred deer roaming freely, adding a sense of wonder to their experience, while the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, with its majestic torii gate standing proudly in the water, provided a stunning backdrop for countless photographs and unforgettable memories.

Kokutai-ji Temple

Touring the same Kokutai-ji Temple garden in Toyama can be a delightful experience, as it offers visitors a unique glimpse into the beauty and serenity of nature. This tranquil space, meticulously designed with vibrant flowers, elegant pathways, and serene water features, allows one to immerse themselves in its peaceful atmosphere.

Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum

Students interacted with Professor Suzuki, a permanent researcher with a PhD in Human Sciences at the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum. She has studied the support and resilience of children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake for many years. On March 11th of this year, she published “Disaster and Child Development: Support and Resilience Learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake” with Akashi Shoten.

International High School Manga & Art Forum in Takaoka

Meeting the World in the Sacred Place of Manga is a program organized by Takaoka Ryukoku High School. It emphasizes education that values each individual student, aiming to help them transform their passions into strengths and shape their futures.

Mini Group Lessons

Students sat with teachers and learned a few valuable lessons about transportation, health, and communication in Japan, including the intricate workings of the efficient public transportation system that connects cities and regions seamlessly. They explored the significance of health initiatives in Japanese society, such as the emphasis on preventive care and healthy eating habits. Additionally, they discussed the importance of effective communication styles in Japanese culture, where non-verbal cues and politeness play crucial roles in everyday interactions, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the interplay between these essential aspects of life in Japan.
